Restaurant Brands International, the parent company of Burger King, announced on November 15 that it planned to acquire Firehouse Subs in an all-cash transaction valued at $1 billion. The deal was expected to close in the following months.
Brand Profile
Firehouse Subs is a sandwich-focused quick-service chain founded in 1994 by former firefighters Chris Sorensen and Robin Sorensen.
At the time of the announcement, Firehouse Subs had 1,200 locations and expected systemwide sales for the year to rise to around $1.1 billion. The company operated with a heavily franchised model: 79% of its restaurants were managed by franchisees across 46 U.S. states, Canada, and other markets.
Strategic Fit for RBI
RBI is backed by 3G Capital. The group had made relatively few acquisitions, but in 2014 it acquired Tim Hortons and scaled the brand; FoodBud noted that Tim Hortons was valued at more than $11 billion at the time. Tim Hortons China had also been separated from the broader business and planned to list on Nasdaq through a SPAC.
After the Firehouse Subs acquisition, the brand's management team was expected to continue running day-to-day operations. RBI planned to support global growth through its digital capabilities, franchise network, and expansion experience.
Digital and Off-Premise Operations
Firehouse Subs' digital strategy aligned with RBI's priorities. Before the pandemic, the company had already been testing smaller-format stores to support delivery demand, including dedicated pickup areas for delivery orders.
According to investors cited in the article, delivery accounted for about 14% of Firehouse Subs' total sales as of October. The brand's loyalty program had 3.5 million active users and was adding about 50,000 new users per month, experience that FoodBud suggested could also be useful for Burger King.
